PLAY #299: SUN SCREAMS (OCT 18)

A desert.

Screen behind sand, with shadow puppet derricks.

CONQUERER and SOLDIER sit on deck-chairs: they do not notice the screens behind them.

SOLDIER

Control is what’s important.

CONQUERER

Absolutely.

SOLDIER

Too much freedom’s a bad thing.

CONQUERER

They don’t know what to do with freedom.

SOLDIER

Exactly. Democracy must be carefully managed from above.

WOMAN walks behind deck-chairs, moves behind the screen and starts to draw flames.

CONQUERER

And the rebellion?

SOLDIER

Let it die out.

CONQUERER

Naturally?

SOLDIER

Might need a bit of help.

CONQUERER

Done.

SOLDIER

Not good to have pipes attacked.

CONQUERER

No.

SOLDIER

Make an example.

CONQUERER

Yes.

WOMAN moves to another screen, starts to draw flames over the derricks.

CONQUERER

Of her?

SOLDIER

Why not?

CONQUERER

She’ll get sympathy.

SOLDIER

Not if you approach it the right way. Call her a witch.

CONQUERER

A devil.

SOLDIER

Exactly. A thing to be burnt at a stake. Do it quick though and the most important thing: don’t let the pictures get out.

WOMAN’s drawing gets increasingly messy, flames spilling everywhere.

SOLDIER

It doesn’t do to get distracted by the locals.

CONQUERER

No.

SOLDIER

This is the perfect arena to craft your legacy.

CONQUERER

Indeed.

SOLDIER

Finish the job your father started.

CONQUERER

Yes.

SOLDIER

Prove your mettle.

CONQUERER

Don’t worry about my mettle. It can handle any fire.

SOLDIER

Good.

WOMAN draws a large sun, showering flames onto the earth.

WOMAN continues to draw on the screens, until they are all aflame.

CONQUERER and SOLDIER sit on the deck-chairs and continue to talk.
