PLAY #209: KALEIDO-SCOPING THE FUTURE (JULY 10)

A shadow puppet play.

EXPLORER stands on a solar panel, pitched on the edge of a cliff like a diving board.

EXPLORER shifts on the panel, readying for a jump, not quite prepared.

EXPLORER

this change must be different

it has to be more than a simple ‘x’ for ‘y’ exchange

not wood for coal

coal for oil

oil for gas

this

must change something more fundamental

how we see the world

how we see each other

what we see

so

if I am to commit

it has to feel right.

EXPLORER moves back and forwards on panel.

but

it can be hard to predict the future

in what sense will energy renew?

like a library book due

its deadline extended and extended

the book remaining unread?

like grass sprouting around a condominium

stretching up and out

until everything tingles again?

will the future be one of

more of the same

x for y

y for z

until the alphabet is all spent?

will the future be renewed

revitalized

reinvigorated

no room for extraction

in the caring of the world

the sharing with the sun?

hard to predict…

OTHER EXPLORERS enter, move to the edge of the board.

EXPLORERS

sometimes

the only way

to know

even when change is terrifying

even when the future looks like a set of jaws

sometimes the only thing to do

is to

JUMP!

EXPLORERS leap off the panel.

Panel springs like a diving board, EXPLORERS drifting around the screen.

EXPLORERS float magically, nobody hitting the ground.

Backrground colours change, warm ones, like the sun is getting closer, bright yellows and oranges, a happy kaleidoscope.

EXPLORERS continue to float.
