PLAY #155: THE LONG GREEN SHADOW (MAY 11)

A statue of Margaret Thatcher.

PAINTER is slowly painting her green.

GUARD looks on.

GUARD

You think she’d have liked this new do?

PAINTER

Why not? Stone chips, at least this’ll keep it fresh.

Painting.

GUARD

What do you think of this Rudd appointment?

PAINTER

She’s a Thatcherite, isn’t she? Knows what she wants. Knows what she’s doing.

GUARD

I suppose. Can’t believe it turned out this way.

PAINTER

It hasn’t turned out anyway yet. Always takes a while for the color to set.

Painting.

GUARD

Don’t you think she looks like a Martian?

PAINTER

Careful, that’ll be heresy soon!

Painting.

PAINTER

Maybe a little. In a good way, you know, extraordinary?

GUARD

Yeah.

Painting is finished. PAINTER assembles tools.

PAINTER

Catch ya.

GUARD

Right.

PAINTER exits.

GUARD guards the statue.
